i was watching this segment on dateline nbc where they toured some of garment factories in Bangladesh. n it just got to me.

at work, many of us complain how we don't get paid enuf for doing the type of work that we do...but after watching this segment..i think we get paid more than enuf..especially since we coulda done worse, like the workers at the garment factories do in third world countries.

the segment explored the garment factories to see whether they were following proper policies n procedures for the workers..to ensure that they were getting their required breaks n pay n that there were no child workers. What they found was that altho there were no child labourers, there was no such improvement on the rest. ppl were forced to work overtime w/out pay, they had to get permission from their supervisors to go to the bathroom, n sometimes if they made mistakes, they had to work overtime w/out pay. but wut's really awful abt the whole thing is that they got paid less than a dollar an hour!!! that's just wrong.

the reporter who was doin the story was going under the guise of a supposed brand name trying to get a garment company to make his clothes..n wut the supervisors of each of the companys told him were a big bunch of lies. they would show that the workers were treated fairly, and paid good money..but to see, that was not the case.

one of the bangladeshi women who worked in the factories was taken to the States so that she could see where the clothes that she made went. most of the garment factories cater to walmart, kohls, n other brand name apparel. The reporter took her to the Walmart n found out that the pants sold for almost 10 times of wut she was being paid..she just started crying. she felt used. n guess wut..those pants only cost us 20bux. n yet here we are, in the western world complaining abt how pricey some of the things we purchase are. however, we(western nations) hv the most choice n the most freedom in the entire world.

it's a double-edged sword i think. ppl here r trying to make ends meet wat w/ all the bills n all..and it's the same situation there..but they r trying to live..if we stop buying these products..these ppl will hv no money wut so ever..so i'm just lost and confused. i only wish there was an easy answer to this..

tired
06.13.05 (4:24 am)   [edit]

i'm still alive..altho just barely! :) i'm working 5 days a week n the other 2 days i'm at school, so i'm being kept quite busy and tired. I got no time to rest! :(so i got no life!!! :p

this week at work has been a tough one for me...muffin u know all about it! :) sorry abt my grumbling..:p i find this very confusing. Where i work, is at the adult rides section in the amusement park..so we have a height restriction. however, many parents drag their kids along n try to get their kids in..eventho' their kids r way too short for the ride. When i say no, they get all crazy on me, n start shouting or plead w/ me to let the kid on coz they r crying too much. i'm sorry but i gotta do my job..muffin, u said something about a mother's love. i find that a bit confusing. if, as a parent u love ur child, why do u insist that the child get on a ride that's not meant for them? you are putting ur child in harm's way..does that count as love..or just trying to get ur kid to stop naggin u? i mean i can understand if ur just trying to please ur child..but sometimes there's a limit rite? i don't think i'd ever let my child on to a ride that they can't go on..i guess i'd be one over-protective mom,eh? :) ne ways, this job has really made me see what parents hv to go thru..and also how ignorant they can be too.

i'm kinda surprised at myself tho'..i never thought i could stand up to strangers, let alone angry adults..but i did..n in a way i'm happy about that. :) i've always seen myself only as this tiny timid girl who had no guts. lol..hehe..now i feel like a tiny stronger(not to mention bitchier) girl! :D ha!!

this blog probably makes no sense wutsoever..not even the title does! :p ne ways, i'll try n update often..:)

21
06.02.05 (4:09 pm)   [edit]

so saturday was my 21st b-day. n i ended up working the entire day..yup from 10:30am till 8:30pm. how abt that for a b-day..lol my b-day gift was my first paycheck. yaay. lol. wat's even funnier is the fact that my bus rides to work were more than my pay!! :D o well..i still enjoy working at marineland. co-workers r awesome!!

i know most ppl enjoy turning 21 n celebrate like crazy..but i gotta say, this was one b-day i wasn't entirely lookin forward to..i even forgot! n eways, i guess this b-day wasn't as bad as last yr..i was back in sl..for my gram's funeral. now that wasn't a good b-day or a good vacation.

funny how time passes us by so fast. one minute ur celebrating ur 6th b-day, the next ur 21st!! one minute ur starting grade school, the next ur graduating from university!! my dad's gonna turn the big 6-0 in december..he's definitely not happy abt that. when ur young, ur all happy n proud abt becoming a yr older..but now, i wanna turn back time n go back to being a kid again. i know it sounds crazy..since i'm not even half way near being OLD yet!! :D but when i'm at work, i see adults n kids..n i see how kids r enjoyin themselves, hvn the time of their life..while the adults r all tired n cranky coz they gotta deal w/ hyperactive kids. :)

ne ways, movin on..it's my bro's highschool grad tonite. i know ur reading my blogs malli..so congratulations..but don't party too hard just yet..u gotta get thru ur finals first! THEN u can party all u want..coz once college starts..everything is ur own responsiblity..mama n dada will not b able to help u out. not like now..just some sisterly advice..i know u don't like hearing it..so i wrote it! ;)

so in other news.a friend of mine just gave birth to a baby boy..so CONGRATULATIONS!!! :) so happy for her! :D yaaay!!! hehe.
